The Lasting Impact of Realistic Horror Films: A Study of Victims in Albert Hitchcock Films
Contemporary horror films often show antagonists committing fantastical monstrosities, while older films delve deeper into the fear of realistic situations. For example, Alfred Hitchcock spins tales based in reality, often portraying subjects suffering from mental disturbances. His portrayals lead to terrifying tales that pass the test of time; the plausibility of his films create a lasting feeling of fear that the viewer could possibly find themselves in the same situation. The relatability creates empathy, and that empathy creates an understanding of others who are like Hitchcock’s characters. These factors are what influenced this study. Through the observation of these films, the reality and complexity of victimhood is revealed, leading to better understanding of victims. The films portray victims as imperfect, and yet, empathy and understanding are achieved. Two aspects of victimhood discussed in this study are the randomness of victimhood and the evolution, and eventual difference of, victim and villain.
