Godly Bindings: BDSM as an Example of Lived Religion

Rainey A. Madsen
Dr. William Ashcraft, Faculty Mentor

My project examines the idea of Bondage, Displine/Dominance, Submission/Sadist, Masochism (BDSM) working as an example of lived religion. Religious practice is ever evolving, from the perspective of lived religion, allowing participants to choose to practice more strictly or less strictly, finding their own interpretations. Some people have found religiosity in their BDSM practices, opposing the negative ideas surrounding BDSM. I will use history, personal testimonies, and connections between religion and BDSM academically.  Alongside understanding how BDSM works as a part of religious practice, this project also examines the potential impact that both lived religion and BDSM provides for the changing ideas of religious practice.
