...and the strange, unknown flowers... for Unaccompanied Flute: How the Writing Style and Story of Thomas Wolfe's Of Time and the River Are Represented Through Musical Composition

Cherish V. Pope
Dr. Julianna Moore, Faculty Mentor

Charles Delaney’s …and the strange, unknown flowers… is a composition inspired by author Thomas Wolfe’s novel, Of Time and the River. Written for solo flute, it features eight sections that mirror the story of Wolfe’s autobiographical main character as he embarks on a journey of self-discovery in his early adult life. Wolfe’s writing style is characterized by a balance of opposites through the use of juxtaposition and contradiction, and Delaney honors this by using just four motives to carry the audience through scenes that reflect the experiences and introspection of Wolfe’s main character. This research presentation will explore the ways in which Of Time and the River and the literary techniques present in the novel are represented in Delaney’s compositional writing and will follow with a performance of the piece.
