Improvisation in the Music Classroom; comparing learning outcomes in both didactic and constructivist contexts
One of the core artistic processes articulated in the National Standards for Arts Education is creation. Improvisation is one such avenue for musical creation yet many educators do not incorporate this into their regular teaching practice for many reasons, including lack of prior experience with improvisation themselves, as well as a lack of pedagogical efficacy. After reviewing the literature on improvisation through participatory practice, improvisation as dialogue, and other didactic approaches to music learning, it is clear that there are many valid approaches to pedagogy of improvisation. This presentation will be presented in two parts: a focus on both the praxial outcomes of the research process (i.e. reflections on my field, translating action into pedagogy) and how the implications of my findings will inform the structure of my future action research project (to be completed in fall of 2023).
