Composing Original Latin American Clarinet Etudes: A Pedagogical Approach to Learning a New Musical Style

Jessica M. Alvarado Brenes♦
Dr. Jesse D. Krebs, Faculty Mentor

Latin American repertoire is often a challenge for clarinet students, particularly the mixture of different complex rhythms, articulations, and styles. The daily practice is what trains musicians to learn and internalize musical styles and then be able to apply this knowledge in a performance. A major part of this process is realized by learning etudes, which are designed with a pedagogical purpose and a technical or musical goal. This project consists of the creation of original etudes based on specific Latin American rhythms that are an important influence for clarinet repertoire, or are strongly related to the clarinet tradition in the region. Concurrently, this research will analyze these genres and rhythms from their historical and cultural context. Since there are currently very few options for clarinet etude books to learn traditional Latin American styles, this project could fill a void and be a beneficial asset to students around the world.
