Expanding Musical HER-izons: An Analysis and Exploration of Female-Composed Clarinet Works for Young Musicians

Autumn M. Heath♦
Dr. Jesse D. Krebs, Faculty Mentor

Participation in the MSHSAA Solo/Small Ensemble Contest is a valuable experience for young musicians, but the scope of literature performed at these events is severely limited in terms of representation. Though there is a statement on the Prescribed Music List for these events encouraging the submission and inclusion of music by underrepresented composers, which is a step in the right direction regarding this issue, to truly make a difference, people must then be willing to seek out and submit the works of these composers. After analyzing both the literature included on the PML and performed in the last three years, my research aims to find works for clarinet by female composers that are appropriate for students of all skill levels to be submitted to MSHSAA for consideration. This will help ensure that all students, especially female musicians, can feel represented by the literature that they choose to perform.
