Youth After Leaving Home: The Diminishing, Stagnating, and Growing Religious Faith

Religion is a part of someone’s identity that helps shape their character, but oftentimes individuals with a religious upbringing have shifts in their beliefs as they age. People form their own beliefs with age, and these beliefs can either be strengthened or weakened by the changes in one’s life. This can be influenced by pursuing higher education, starting a family, moving, or becoming busy with careers or jobs. I have conducted interviews about religious presence in the lives of several students attending Truman State University to uncover their backgrounds and answer the following questions: Did you have a religious presence in your household growing up? How did growing up in a religious household shape your views as an adult? Today, do you hold the same religious beliefs as you did when you were a child?
