Clarinet Vibrato: History and Practice

Emma C. Scherrer
Dr. Jesse D. Krebs, Faculty Mentor

The goal of this project is to trace the use and development of vibrato on the clarinet from the late nineteenth century to the present day. It will examine individual performers and performances, information from biographies and clarinet instructional books, and data from surveys, one of which was recently conducted for this project through the International Clarinet Association. This study will focus on the use of vibrato on clarinet in different performance contexts, particularly how it is used in jazz, Klezmer, and the classical western canon. By analyzing historical performance practices and data from survey respondents, it will conclude that differences in the use of clarinet vibrato is due to cultural standards and perceptions, rather than the mechanics of the instrument.
