Sustainability Practices in France and the United States: A Look Inside

Emma P. Broaddus
Dr. Sana Camara, Faculty Mentor

Sustainable business practices are becoming increasingly important to corporations and consumers as a wide range of domestic and international concerns such as climate change, depletion of natural resources, and human rights issues increase. Large corporations have power to influence and generate change over time. This is done through integrating corporate social responsibility (CSR) within their business operations, environmental, social and governance (ESG) strategies to strengthen the long term success of their company, and investing in socially responsible companies and initiatives to further instigate change. While international standards are in place such as the ISO26000, there are generally few regulations and requirements surrounding the implementation of sustainable practices, especially across countries. French and American corporations vary in terms of motivation, culture, and implementation of these practices. This study will examine the similarities and differences of sustainable practices across French and American corporations to evaluate their effectiveness and the associated impacts.
