Resistance training (RT) is used across many different platforms to help improve muscle strength and performance.  Lacking is information on the carry-over effect of RT for endurance performance in different muscle groups and activities.  The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of RT on improvement of pushup and sit-up performance in college women.  Women (n=205) enrolled in a RT program performed 60-sec maximum repetition pushups and sit-ups before and after training 3 times per week for 12 weeks.  Paired t-test revealed a significantly greater (p<0.001) increase in pushups (10.84 ± 7.19) than in sit-ups (8.81 ± 5.35) following training.  RT may have caused a greater change in pushups compared to sit-ups because of the target activity of the bench press exercise on the main muscle groups used in pushups.  These results support RT for improving overall strength and different endurance performances in women.
