Beyond the Frame: Experimentation in Photographic Collage

Daniel R. Degenhardt
Prof. Priya S. Kambli, Faculty Mentor

The modern ubiquity of photographic technology offers a significant challenge to artists working in this medium; can photographic artists effectively communicate in an environment that is so image saturated?  My research is an examination of and a meditation on humanity’s relationship with nature and my own need (and often failure) to connect with the natural world.  Photography sets itself apart from any other artistic medium in that the subject has a real, physical effect on the image created leading to the belief that photographs are unerring in way that mirrors the human faith in our own sensory infallibility.  By breaking the traditional photographic frame through collage, I work to erase the boundaries constructed by the act of photographing. This body of work is designed to generate more effective conversation and critical thought about human relationship to the natural world and the division we work to create between ourselves and nature.
