Translating for the Community

Ryan D. Stoeckel
Dr. Timothy Farley, Faculty Mentor

This translation project of two documents for the Kirksville R-III School District seeks to meet the needs of francophone members of the community. Part I focuses on revising the rough draft translation of the Kirksville Primary School Handbook, which the Fall 2018 FREN 310 French Grammar for Translation class translated as a class project. I worked to revise and prepare the document for the school. Part II of this project focuses on translating portions of the Kirksville Senior High School Handbook. I am using Skopos Translation theory to inform my decision making. The goal is to make these documents readily comprehensible to this immigrant community. To accomplish this goal requires describing cultural practices and perspectives about schooling in an explicit manner -- aspects that many take for granted. It is my hope that this project will help parents and children of the Kirksville francophone community more easily integrate into local schools.
