How to Explore a Visual Novel: Creating a Methodology for Future Academic Study

Sydney N. Ruffin
Dr. Hena Ahmad, Faculty Mentor

Visual novels are an understudied literary medium. Interactive stories add non-linearity and reader agency to literature creating new structures for narratives and writing styles. I will play through three visual novels: Butterfly Soup, We Know the Devil, and VA-11 Hall-A: Cyberpunk Bartender Action differently to compare and contrast different methods of doing an analysis. I will use both literary and video game analyses in order to create new methodologies for the academic study of visual novels.
