A Translation of Fatou Diome's La mendiante et l'écolière

Julie K. Hewitt
Dr. Sana Camara, Faculty Mentor

This project is a translation of Fatou Diome's short story La mendiante et l'écolière from French to English. The story focuses on a girl who befriends a beggar, Codou. When they meet, the girl sees how impoverished Codou is and decides to lend her money, with which Codou begins to sell peanuts to earn some money. Every day, Codou gives the girl some peanuts and a little bit of money so that she can buy bread for her family, who was recently left by her father. One day, the bakery is closed and the little girl is not able to buy bread for her family, so Codou gives her some peanuts for free, a symbol of their friendship at the end of the story. This translation project will include working through the Senegalese French of Diome's writing and noting the differences between French in Senegal and French in France.
