YouTube: Shifting Power in the Music Industry

Claire A. Briggs
Dr. Marc Rice, Faculty Mentor

YouTube has revolutionized the way music is distributed, listened to, and discovered. The service gives anyone the ability to look up new music and new artists a way to break into previously unheard of markets. YouTube has a tumultuous relationship with the music industry, but they tolerate each other for the mutual benefits they receive.

YouTube changes the way artists become famous. It allows anyone to upload content, and anyone to search for videos, aiding discovery of new artists and empowering the public. To illustrate this process, I examined the videos “Gangnam Style,” an electronic dance song by South Korean musician Psy, and “A Warrior’s Call,” a metal song by Danish band Volbeat.
