The Sermon on the Mount: A Point of Harmony and Divide in the Abrahamic Religions

Amanda M. Hellwege
Dr. William Ashcraft, Faculty Mentor

The Sermon on the Mount is the leading text in Christianity which addresses Jesus’ teachings.  Christianity, Judaism and Islam all view Jesus as a significant figure in their own religion, and although they are all looking at the same man, they each have varying ideas of who he was.  The three Abrahamic religions all share many similarities in their traditions, but that does not mean they do not have many conflicts.  Looking at their views of Jesus allows for a deeper understanding of their similarities and conflicts and how they affect their interaction with each other.  Through the Sermon on the Mount, a better understanding of the different and similar perceptions of Jesus and the message he shared can be found in light of Jewish and Islamic interpretations.
