Synthesis of 1,3,4-trihydroxy-2-methylbutan-2-yl sulfate

Emily M. Churchill
Dr. Amy Fuller and Dr. Tim Humphry, Faculty Mentors

Sulfate esters are small organic molecules that have been identified in the atmosphere, the most abundant of which is 1,3,4-trihydroxy-2-methylbutan-2-yl sulfate. This molecule is a derivative of isoprene, a substance found naturally in trees.  Since the effect that sulfate esters have on the environment is still unknown, their synthesis and characterization is important for understanding them.
