A Comparison of Original Wind Band Works with their Corresponding Adaptations

Jennifer M. Rubin♦
Dr. Curran Prendergast, Faculty Mentor

This study will explore the differences and similarities between three difficult band standards and adaptations of those works meant to reflect the abilities of less mature ensembles. Through analysis and comparison of each score, I will gain insight to the benefits or setbacks of having young ensembles rehearse and perform the arrangement as opposed to the original work I hope to discover if young band arrangements of original band works are worth playing with young ensembles. It is important the arrangement accurately reflects the intent of the original band composition. Establishing specific differences and similarities between the original and adaptation will allow me to assess the integrity of the adaptations and if young bands would benefit from learning and performing the adaptation as they would from performing the original composition.
