Stay-at-Home Mom: Understanding the Gap between Working Mothers and Working Fathers

Caroline G. Ruprecht
Dr. Hena Ahmad, Faculty Mentor

In the United States, there is a 22.7% gap between the number of men and women in the workforce who has a child under the age of 18. So many women have to temporarily sacrifice the advancement in their career in order to start a family. This may be due to the fact that a social expectation still exists that women must stay at home to raise the children. However, this could also be caused by the fact that some women have to spend many weeks at home recovering after the baby is born. In some cases, the bond that takes place in the first twelve weeks of a baby’s life is enough that makes some women want to stay at home. Recently, there have been small advancements to help close the large 22.7% gap in working men and women with a child.
