Concealed Carry, Firearms, and Higher Education: History of Gun Rights and Control with an Emphasis on Campus Carry

Thomas B. Stoll
Dr. Anton Daughters, Faculty Mentor

Sandy Hook, Columbine, Virginia Tech, and Umpqua Community College. Many Americans remember these names because of the mass shootings that occurred there. These mass shootings have intensified the national debate over whether or not gun control and gun free zones reduce shootings.  Drawing from law enforcement documents, statistics from government agencies like the ATF and Department of Education, and historical accounts of gun control, I argue that gun control on college campuses here in the United States and around the world does little to reduce the rate of criminal shootings. Alternatively, concealed carry of weapons may be a great tool to use to stop many crimes from being committed.
