Student Athlete Knowledge of Concussion Before and After a Lesson
The purpose of this study was to ascertain college student-athletes' awareness of concussion symptoms, protocols, and potentially long-term effects. This study sought to determine the baseline knowledge of concussions, as well as if the student-athletes’ knowledge of concussions improved after a short lesson. Athletes from four teams– women’s soccer, women’s volleyball, women’s softball, and football– were presented with a survey containing questions regarding demographics followed by a pre-test that assessed their baseline knowledge of concussions. After this test, the athletes were given a short lecture on concussions and symptoms and then reassessed with a post-test. Data collection is still ongoing, however, results will be made available by the time of the Student Research Conference.
