Energy Recycling: Harnessing Wasted Energy to Limit the Need for External Energy Sources

It is possible to harness some wasted energy from daily activities, such as walking and opening doors, in the form of vibrational energy. This research investigates the practicality of attempting to harness this energy in an attempt to reduce the need for excess power supplies to low-power technology such as lights or to help recharge things such as batteries. Energy harnessing is accomplished using the piezoelectric effect, electromagnetic induction, electrostatic harnessing, and triboelectric methods. As the goal here is only to harness “wasted” energy, not to replace all needs for external power, it would be most efficient to use piezoelectric panels in areas that receive the most foot traffic to generate power whenever someone steps on them.
