Laser-Guided Lightning Strikes

Curtis A. Womach
Dr. Rasanjali Jayathissa, Faculty Mentor

Lightning strikes take thousands of lives and cause billions of dollars in property damage annually. A new advancement in lightning control technology, laser-guided lighting, hopes to mitigate these damages. This study analyzes the advancements in laser-guided lightning strikes, a technique that uses high-powered lasers to redirect lightning strikes. This novel technique is compared to other available lightning control techniques. The results show that while challenging, the lasers can be used to redirect lighting and when used in conjunction with other lighting control techniques helps to mitigate the damages of lightning strikes.
