Abstract

This study examines whether the preassessment of spelling words helps educators to meet the needs of 4th grade students participating in the Words Their Way spelling program. I hope to prove pre-tests are a necessary source of data and analyzing and comparing them with student progress throughout the 17-week spelling program.

This study examined fourteen 4th grade students from a rural elementary school. The data was obtained by every student completing a preassessment spelling test and the organizing of students’ preassessment scores into groups by taking inventory of their common spelling errors to assess their spelling needs. Workbooks were used and organized for the various learning groups. Workbooks and curriculum, such as word sorts and spelling review, were added to the daily classroom routine. Weekly spelling tests were given to each learning group and their scores were analyzed weekly to assess the continuation of their spelling needs and how well the preassessment determined those needs, allowing them to move up in workbooks and to increase their spelling comprehension.
