Power Loss in Diffraction Gratings due to Surface Plasmon Resonance

Wood’s anomaly is the phenomenon where large decreases in total diffracted intensity are observed from reflected diffraction gratings as a function of incident angle and wavelength of the incident light. This is explained by surface plasmon resonance. Here we explore the theory of surface plasmon resonance as well as verify Wood’s anomaly for different types of diffraction gratings. We find decreased intensities corresponding to the theoretical predictions. Further work is to be done concerning the symmetries of these diffraction patterns.
