Comparisons of Bioelectric Impedance Analysis to DXA for % Fat Estimation in College Football Players
Dual-energy X-Ray absorptiometry (DXA) has become the standard for body composition analysis. However, question remains concerned agreement between DXA and widely accepted simple bioelectric impedance analysis (BIA) devices for estimating %fat in athletes. The purpose of this study was to compare 2 BIA devices with DXA for estimating %fat in college football players. Fifty-eight players were measured with a hand-to-hand device (HBIA) and a leg-to-leg BIA device (LBIA). Repeated-measures ANOVA revealed that HBIA (15.8 ± 4.9%) and LBIA (17.2 ± 5.9%) significantly underestimated %fat compared to DXA (20.2 ± 6.3%). Regression equations to correct the underestimation resulted in values that were not significantly different from DXA for HBIA but were lower for LBIA. The correction approach may be a viable option to estimate DXA %fat when using HBIA devices but not when using LBIA in football players. Further investigation is warranted to evaluate other prediction methods to estimate DXA %fat.
