Unaccounted for Work in High School Baseball Pitchers

Logan J. Benedict♦
Dr. Brandy Schneider, Faculty Mentor

Many states have constructed policies of limitations on a pitch count in school-sanctioned baseball. The policies commonly state how many pitches are allowed for each age group and the corresponding number of rest days that are required before their next appearance. Pitches that are counted are balls thrown from the mound to a hitter during live gameplay. The limitations do not apply to pitches thrown during a bullpen warm-up session, in-between innings, or general warm-up throws. These extra throwing sessions can oftentimes result in a large number of pitches not contributing to the total that is reported. Another problem facing the smaller school is the lack of roster depth. This results in pitchers playing other positions during their mandatory rest days. Unaccounted work, such as these extra throws, can possibly be an explanation for injuries resulting from fatigue accumulation or systemic stress.
