Incels and the Manosphere: From Seclusion to Terror

Jay L. Sitze
Dr. Margaret Edwards, Faculty Mentor

The incel community is largely composed of men who believe they are unable to obtain sex. They can easily be identified by their misogynistic rhetoric, as they oppose the sexual liberalization of women and identify it as a source for their current circumstance of celibacy. Scholars have previously noted the influence of online forums and mental illness as a cause for young men to join these groups. Discussions within these forums center around the objectification of women, with some members going as far as to violently act upon these words such as the 2014 Isla Vista attack. The goal of this work is to understand why the community is growing,  as well as why the intensity of this belief has led to increased violence. Examining their reasons for membership and analyzing current forums as a means to understand the rise in violence.
