Tattoo Culture: More than a Rebel

Olivia M. Daehnke
Dr. Amber Johnson and Dr. Brian Ott, Faculty Mentors

Tattoo artistry is rarely recognized as a reliable profession. Often these artists are viewed as rebels of society, who tend to have their own culture of people surrounding them. However, the perspective of those who provide this particular good and service brings us entirely new information behind the art that we would not have access to otherwise. I was able to conduct semi-structured interviews with experienced tattoo artists in Missouri to answer the following questions: What is it that leads you to a career that many others view as less than professional? How do they feel about the changes that have come about in recent years within the tattoo industry? And lastly, what is their daily interaction with clients and coworkers, and how does that shape their opinion of the tattoo industry?
