Proposed Small Mammal Community Survey in the Spring Creek Watershed

Kenneth H. Damper
Dr. Stephanie Fore, Faculty Mentor

Biological diversity is crucial in defining the function of an ecosystem. Small mammals less than 35 grams, such as mice and voles, in Missouri function as herbivores and prey for larger animals. The objective of my research proposal is to assess the diversity of small terrestrial mammals in five habitats within Spring Creek Watershed in northeast Missouri. In May to August 2023, mammals will be captured live, identified, and released. This study will compare the number and abundance of each species in each habitat. This data will be compared with diversity estimates from the Spring and Fall of 2022. The results of this diversity survey will be provided to the Missouri Conservation Department to assist in resource management.
