Understanding Language Attitudes and Usage of French-speaking African International Students from French-Colonized Countries

In many regions of the world, the languages spoken are not always because of their desire. Colonization deeply changed many African countries, and still influences opinions and attitudes. This study seeks to understand the language usage and attitudes of French-speaking African International students, who are from a previously French colonized country. The study was done as an online survey in three different sections. It found that while students are aware of the linguistic and cultural influence French has had on themselves and their country, they also acknowledge that French is a native language that has positive impacts outside of French colonization. Additionally, students were aware of the status of French as a dominant language, and responded to mock situations accordingly; even while holding an overtly negative opinion of colonization. Ultimately, the study found that though colonization does affect language attitudes, what determines attitudes and usage goes beyond one reason.
