Impact of Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome Virus on Reproductive Performance in Sows and Gilts
Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) is a viral disease that affects both the reproductive and respiratory performance in pigs. PRRS causes impaired reproductive performance in sows and gilts, including fetal death and premature farrowing. PRRS is the leading cause of financial losses in the pig industry, causing a loss of about $302.06 million across the United States each year. This project studies a relatively new variant of PRRS, called L1C RFLP 1-2-4, and its impact on gilts and sows of various ages and reproductive histories. This study will analyze statistical information obtained from a sow farm in Missouri infected with PRRS. This analysis will use information regarding the number of fetal deaths, live-born piglets, piglets weaned, sow deaths, and not pregnant sows from before and after the outbreak to portray the drastic reproductive and respiratory effects of PRRS on pig herds.
