Football is a game based on strength, speed, and skill. Players train to enhance each component. Lacking is an analysis of the interrelationship among these components. The purpose of this study was to assess the relationship among strength and performance characteristics of college football players. Players (n = 60) were measured for 3 strength items and 4 performance skills during spring conditioning. Strength items included bench press, squat and clean. Performance items included standing long jump, vertical jump, L-drill, and proagility. Factor analysis isolated 2 components composed of strength items and speed/agility items. Total strength was not significantly correlated with any performance variable (r = -0.02 to 0.14). Correlating performance rankings for each test separately did not enhance the relationships between strength and performance variables (r = -0.05 to 0.06). While strength and performance items are important facet of football, they are separate components and should be trained separately.
