Effect of Professional Sports Team Performance on Valuation and Attendance

Michael T. Lakey
Dr. Terry Olson, Faculty Mentor

Since 2012, Forbes has estimated the value of all North American professional sports franchises in the four leagues widely considered to be the “major leagues:” the National Football League (NFL), Major League Baseball (MLB), the National Hockey League (NHL) and the National Basketball Association (NBA). Economists have found team performance to be a major driving factor of team value, as better teams tend to be more popular especially if they are in larger markets. Home team attendance has also been found to be a major factor in the consideration of team values, as those with higher attendance numbers create more revenue. In this project, I examine the effect of team performance on team attendance and value, controlling for the impact of market size, the proximity of other franchises, which league a team plays in, its own revenue, and stadium factors.
