Restorative Practices in the Classroom

Restorative practice is a fairly new form of classroom management where students are given the opportunity to think about what they do, how they can change it and what they can do to make amends with anyone that they interact with. Restorative practices give dignity and respect to students. Originally used in criminal justice, restorative practice has students use their own thoughts to think about actions, how they feel, how it made others feel, and what they can do to make things right, and more. Instead of being labeled as a “bad” person by receiving punishments, they can build off of this experience and build their identities into who they want to be rather than what they are told they are. The two goals of restorative practices are going to be to benefit and support a student’s sense of belonging and provide and build a connection with teachers.
