Preceptor Perceptions of Preparedness within Athletic Training Programs
Background: Clinical education is a mandatory part of athletic training programs that is necessary for development of student skills and knowledge. Clinical education relies upon the leadership of prepared and educated preceptors. Few studies have identified inhibitory influences on preceptors. Methods: A randomized sample through the National Athletic Trainer Association (NATA) database yielding 221 respondents was used in this survey study. Results: Specialized preceptor training beyond program policies and procedures was only reported by 71.9%. Reported topics of preceptor training included program policies and procedures (19.96%), accreditation standards/policies (17.52%), teaching strategies (12.64%), feedback strategies (15.3%), evaluative skill techniques (13.75%), advanced patient care techniques (4.88%), certification opportunities (2.66%), and educational opportunities (11.31%). Ninety percent reported being explained their preceptor role. Conclusions: Preceptors within athletic training programs are not receiving training in pedagogy. Lack of appropriate training for preceptors may hinder student learning.
