Exploring the Immigrant Experience through French Cinema

James L. Trout
Dr. Timothy Farley, Faculty Mentor

There is a rich history of immigrants from the Maghreb settling in France. Influenced by a number of historical and sociological factors, newly arrived persons face a variety of challenges in their new country. This project will examine some of these challenges through the lens of French cinema. The movies Inch’Allah Dimanche, La Graine et Le Mulet, and Le Gone du Chaâba portray the experiences of new immigrants to France. Among the topics explored are the creation of a new, multinational identity, the complex role of women in Maghrebi-French households, and the dynamic language patterns that arise from the use of Arabic and French in conjunction with one another.
