Comparison of Repetition Techniques to Predict 1RM Bench Press in Women

The purpose of this study was to evaluate different repetition procedures to predict 1RM bench press in women.  Fourteen women volunteered to perform three repetition techniques and a maximal bench press on different occasions.  A load that allows 3-10 repetitions provided the best prediction of 1RM (R = 0.98, CV = 4%).  Repetitions with a load equivalent to 30% of body mass produced a slightly lower correlation (R = 0.90) but had greater variation in prediction (CV = 10%).  Repetitions in the YMCA test with a constant load of 15.9 kg produced the least effective prediction (r = 0.71, CV = 15%).  Fewer repetitions with heavier loads appear to be superior for predicting 1RM bench press in young women.  Further investigation with a larger sample size and more diverse strength levels might be needed to confirm these results.
