Sexual Health and Student Perceptions: A Qualitative Study Into the Current Knowledge, Attitudes, and Behaviors of Sexual Health Practices of College Students

College is a time where many students begin exploring the world of dating, relationships, and casual sexual encounters. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly fifty percent of sexually active young adults will contract a sexually transmitted infection (STI) by the age of 25. Discussing sexual health is often considered a taboo which leaves many lacking the education to recognize STI symptoms, get STI tested, or feel comfortable discussing sexual health topics with potential partners. Thus, the present study seeks to identify the knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors of Truman students regarding sexual health and STI testing through online surveys and focus groups with the intention of using these results to tailor more appropriate programming on campus.
