Bethany C. Daniels*, Kaylyn A. Olson, and Alyssa Zuelke
Dr. Janice Clark, Faculty Mentor

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are commonly used worldwide due to their ease of access, affordability, and pain management properties. Athletes especially may use these medications to treat injuries sustained while participating in athletic events. However, misuse of these medications can lead to serious medical problems such as kidney damage, liver damage, and/or stomach ulcers. These dangers coupled with lack of knowledge can be potentially catastrophic for athletes. The purpose of this study was to ascertain the knowledge, behaviors, and usage habits of college athletes at Truman State regarding the use of self-administered NSAIDs to combat the acute pain associated with athletic performances. A survey was distributed to over 200 athletes at Truman State. The results will be presented and discussed.
