Normative Range of the Isometric Front Plank
The isometric front plank is a well-known commonly performed exercise in the strength and conditioning field. It is an important exercise for core stability, balance, and posture. Despite its popularity, few studies exist providing parameters specifying what a healthy level of ability in this exercise might be. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to develop normative values on a group of college men and women. Forty-five college students (14 men and 31 women), aged 19.84 ± 1.49 yrs, volunteered to perform an isometric plank to fatigue. The mean for the composite group was 96.56 ± 54.12 s and showed a normal distribution curve. Men held the position significantly longer (125.70 ± 57.11 s) than women (83.40 ± 48.03 s). These data may serve as a reference point for evaluating isometric plank endurance in young adults. Further studies may be needed to confirm these values.
