Influence of yozG Expression on Phenotypes of Bacillus subtilis
Bacillus subtilis is a model Gram-positive bacterium. The wild type strain is capable of swarming motility, sporulation, and biofilm formation. Previous work shows that knockouts of yozG are defective in swarming motility, while overexpression produces a possible defect on both biofilm formation and growth (unpublished data). However, we have been unable to complement the phenotype of yozG. yozG lies in an operon between the genes yoaS and yoaT. Here we mutate each of the three genes, allowing us to determine which of the genes is responsible for the change in phenotype of B. subtilis. We are currently examining the swarming, biofilm formation, and growth phenotypes of yoaS, yozG, and yoaT mutants.
