Effects of PALS Reading Program on Reading Fluency
Reading fluency is an important aspect for helping students with reading comprehension and word recognition. Students who struggle with reading fluency oftentimes have trouble and feel frustrated while reading. The Peer Assisted Learning Strategies Program, also known as PALS, is a cooperative learning strategy that intentionally pairs students so they have peer mentors to help them as they read. Students are paired based on ability and readings are assigned based on the lower reading level. The student with the higher reading level reads first for five minutes and models reading fluency. Then, the lower reading level student is coached by the higher reader as they read the exact same passage. The readers practice fluency and switch back and forth until the readings are complete. The study aimed to examine how the PALS reading program affects fourth graders who struggle with reading fluency.
