Website Creation on Native Americans from Northeast Missouri: The Dispossession of Lands of the Ioway, Missouria, and Otoe

As Missouri has no federally recognized Native American tribes or tribal lands, it can be difficult for the local citizen to remember that this state, like all other states in the US, traditionally belonged to Native American tribes. In Northeast Missouri, there were three tribes that had land: the Ioway, the Missouria, and the Otoe. As part of an online COPLAC course Hidden Pasts and Indian Lands, I and fellow Truman student Elizabeth Westhoff, created a website showing the dispossession of Native American lands in this region of the Midwest. The website (http://hidden.coplacdigital.org/truman/) presents a historical narrative that textbooks often leave out. Drawing from primary and secondary sources, it offers information on not only the treaties that took land from Native American tribes, but also on the origin of the tribes, and the difficulties that they faced when the settlers began to arrive.
