The Effects of Using a Workshop Model in Math on Student Achievement
Differentiated instruction is the key to unlocking student potential. For years, studies have shown how the use of a workshop model in elementary writing settings (“writer’s workshop”) has been beneficial to student achievement and growth. This workshop model can also be used in a cross-curricular manner. In this study, students participated in math workshop for the duration of four-weeks, where instruction and practice work were differentiated and tailored to meet the needs of the individual student. Math workshop allowed students a sense of control and self-efficacy. Students were put in control of their own learning, and were allowed to work at their own pace, allowing for greater growth and higher achievement.
