Pairing Canonical and Non-canonical Texts: Impacts and Implications
This study sought to identify the impacts of pairing texts from the classroom curriculum, or canonical texts, with contemporary texts such as video and audio clips, songs, and popular fiction. In this qualitative case study of an eleventh grade English classroom, student engagement and enthusiasm were observed and documented in a field journal. Student work was evaluated to identify common responses to the paired texts. Finally, students wrote reflections comparing their initial response to the canonical texts and their overall responses after pairing with contemporary ones. The results of this study indicate potential starting points to improve student experiences with canonical texts in other ELA classrooms.
