How Men are Restricted by Masculinity

Janet Lemus
Dr. Hena Ahmad, Faculty Mentor

This paper will examine how stereotypes and gender norms affect the perception of masculinity and how masculinity affects men. Men have additional barriers that limits their accessibility to stepping out of traditional roles. They have to constantly worry about proving their masculinity to be a “real” man. The characteristics of masculinity change so men have to adapt as time passes. Men use homophobia, women, femininity, and peers to show their manliness but in turn restrict themselves to conformity. There are also different expectations between homosexual and heterosexual men. Their sexuality sometimes gives them leeway in expressing masculinity in a nontraditional way.  If we have a better understanding as to why males feel the need to prove their masculinity according to gender norms and roles, it will be easier to find a way for them to feel comfortable being themselves. Men won’t have to stay within the gender boundaries or fear repercussion.
