When discussing European royalty one finds the queens of France in a peculiar position, for in virtually every other European nation there have been women who were capable of ruling independent of male power. One needs only to look across the Channel to England for proof of this. In France, one sees no such queen. Popular scholarly essays and pro-feminist books have often claimed sexism as the primary cause of this. However, this work asserts that sexism was only one link in the chain that barred women from power. Instead, xenophobia was the greater issue at hand, and the driving force that kept France from having its own Elizabeth I or Victoria.
