Relationship of lean mass, fat mass, and bone mineral content to body mass of Truman State University varsity football players
Analysis of lean mass (LM), fat mass (FM), and bone mineral content (BMC) have not been extensively studied in college football players. Our purpose was to determine the relationship of LM, FM, and BMC to across the range of body masses (BM) typically observed in college football players. Seventy-five NCAA D-II football players (age = 20.2 ± 1.2 y) volunteered to serve as subjects in this correlational study. Body composition was assessed using dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA). Results indicated that FM and LM had significant, curvilinear relationships (r = 0.944 and 0.827, respectively) with BM, with FM accounting for 74% of the variance in BM and LM accounting for 26%. BMC had a linear relationship with BM, but accounting for <1% of the variance in BM. The biggest contributor to BM gain in football players is the accumulation of FM, not the accumulation of muscle mass.
