The Relationship Between Sport Environment and Personality
Previous research has discovered that participation in some types of sports environments, such as team vs. individual and extreme vs. low-risk sports, can be predicted by certain personality characteristics of the athlete. However, previous research has not yet explored other factors of sport environment such as level of competition and level of physical contact. In the current study, subjects completed a sport history survey, personality inventory, and demographics questionnaire to investigate any relationships amongst these additional factors of sport environment, athlete personality characteristics, and athlete demographics. The implications of this research may assist in collegiate sport recruitment efforts and assist individuals in finding a sport in which they feel most comfortable. Additionally, the results may benefit coach-athlete relationships by highlighting both the personality characteristics most prevalent in certain sports as well as the coaching techniques most effective for these personality characteristics. A detailed analysis of the results will be discussed.
